Floppy Disk

Invented by – David L. Noble

The 8-inch flexible "floppy" disc and associated disc drive mechanism were envisioned and developed by David Noble at IBM. He invented a novel technology, a flexible "memory disc" with an 8-inch diameter. Apart from creating the technology, Noble and his colleagues also wrapped the disc in a plastic sleeve lined with fabric that cleaned dust particles from the surface as it turned, offering an ease of handling and protection that contributed to the floppy disk's broad acceptance. IBM's first flexible disc drive, debuted in 1971, ushered in a major new area of the computer industry, paving the way for the personal computer revolution and the formation of a separate software industry. The floppy disc icon became synonymous with file storage.

Email

Invented by – Ray Tomlinson

Raymond Samuel Tomlinson was an American computer programmer who created the first email software on the ARPANET system, which was the forerunner to the Internet, in 1971. It was the first system that allowed users on various hosts connected to ARPANET to send mail to each other. He decided to create a networked messaging tool on his own. Most computers at the time permitted users to send messages to one another, but there was little motivation to send messages across computers because so few machines were networked. Tomlinson pieced together a solution, indicating networked email with the now-ubiquitous @ symbol.

Microprocessor

Invented by – Ted Hoff, Federico Faggin, and Stanley Mazor

The Intel 4004, invented by Intel engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stanley Mazor, was publicly announced in November 1971 as the world's first single-chip microprocessor. The only way to go once the development of integrated circuits transformed computer design was down — in size, that is. The Intel 4004 chip took the integrated circuit one step further by combining all of the components that make a computer work (such as the central processor unit, memory, and input and output controls) onto a single tiny chip. It was now feasible to programme intelligence into inanimate devices.

UNO Cards

Invented by – Merle and Ray Robbins

Merle Robbins invented the card game UNO in 1971 in order to settle a dispute with his son over the rules of the game Crazy Eights. On the dining room table, the first decks were conceived and built. Then he and his family took out a mortgage on their house to raise $8,000 and produced the first 5,000 UNO decks. He sold them out of his barbershop at first, while his son Ray distributed them to his classmates. He sold the UNO rights to International Games for $50,000 in 1972, with royalties of ten cents every copy.

String trimmer

Invented by – George Ballas

George Charles Ballas, Sr. was a businessman from the United States. In 1971, he designed the Weed Eater, the first string trimmer. The spinning nylon bristles of an automatic car wash gave him the idea for the Weed Eater trimmer. He reasoned that he could use a similar strategy to protect the bark on the trees he was pruning. Emerson Electric eventually bought his company and combined it with Poulan. Electrolux later bought Poulan/Weed Eater and spun off the outdoor sector as Husqvarna AB in 2006.
