Smartshirt sensors

Invented by – Sundraseran Jayaraman and his collegues

Sundraseran Jayaraman and his colleagues invented smartshirt sensors in 2001. The SmartShirt records heart and respiration rates, body temperature, and calories burned and is constructed of a soft, washable fabric with optical and electrical fibres woven into it. Wirelessly transmitted data can be forwarded to doctors or personal trainers. Future goods include military-grade shirts that would pinpoint a besieged soldier's exact location and relay information about wounds to triage troops. Jayaraman came up with the idea of incorporating optical and conductive fibres into the fabric of a lightweight combat suit. These fibres are connected to and capable of transmitting data from sensors implanted on the body to medical workers at a remote site via a pager-sized monitor worn at the hip.

Artificial Liver

Invented by – Dr. Kenneth Matsumura

Dr. Kenneth Matsumura's Bio-Artificial Liver has a two-part chamber with a semipermeable membrane in between, with the patient's blood on one side and live rabbit cells suspended in a solution on the other. As blood toxins flow across the membrane, rabbit cells digest them and transfer the proteins and other beneficial substances back to the other side. The chances of infection or rejection are reduced since the rabbit cells never come into direct contact with human blood. It may also allow a damaged liver to heal on its own in some situations, obviating the need for a transplant entirely.

Gyroplane

Invented by – Groen Bros. Aviation

Two Utah brothers, David and Jay Groen, have reintroduced the gyroplane, which was first proposed in 1919 by Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva. They've spent 15 years and $40 million refining a concept that they think will be a less expensive, simpler, and safer alternative to helicopters. There is no need for an airport. The gyroplane, like a helicopter, takes off virtually vertically and can fly 330 miles at a cruising speed of 120 miles per hour. It has a gas turbine-powered propeller that propels the ship forward and generates enough airspeed to power two asymmetrical overhead blades, unlike a helicopter. Only when the wind surges up through these 42-foot blades do they rotate. They provide lift, stability, and increased safety to the aircraft; in the event of engine failure, they continue to rotate and enable for a safe, controlled descent.

In 2001, Peter Michaels invented the disposable cell phone. Disposable cell phones are simple, one-time-use devices designed for casual users who want to bring a phone on vacation or keep one in their emergency bag. The Hop-On Wireless, which costs $30 for 30 minutes of conversation time, will be one of the first to hit the market. The device (about the size of a deck of cards) comprises only a fraction of the components contained in a regular cell phone to keep prices down. There's no keypad or display, and it doesn't take incoming calls. Instead, users speak the number aloud into an earphone (included), and voice-recognition technology translates the sounds into digits and connects the connection.
